Phosphoric acid
Phosphoric acid is also a key imported product for phosphate fertilizers, allowing suppliers to miss out a production stage entirely and instead purchase phosphoric acid directly. Phosphoric acid is produced from phosphate rock by the wet or thermal process. The wet process (used for roughly 80% of global phosacid) consists of reaction, filtration and concentration steps, the rock is ground and acidified with sulphuric acid in a reactor vessel. Then it goes through a filtration step and an evaporation step to obtain merchant grade phosphoric acid (52-54% P2O5). While this grade is used for both fertilizers and animal feed production, further purification is required for higher grade phosacid used in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.
